In a recent health tip, Dr. Savant mentions that dabigatran also known as Pradaxa was FDA approved in October 2010 for reducing the risk of strokes and clots in patients with an irregular heart beat, also known as atrial fibrillation. The advantage of Pradaxa over the standard medication, warfarin (Coumadin) is that you don't have to monitor Pradaxa's blood levels with regular blood tests. Pradaxa comes as a 150 mg capsule that is prescribed twice a day. But if you have weak kidneys a dose reduction is necessary. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember unless, it is within 6 hours of the next scheduled dose. Common side effects include stomach bleeding and dyspepsia or heartburn-like symptoms which may decrease if taken with food. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking other blood thinner type medications since this may increase your risk of bleeding side effects.
