Just over 1000 of the women developed atrial fibrillation during the follow-up period. These women were more than four times more likely to die from a cardiovascular cause and more than twice as likely to die from any cause as the women without atrial fibrillation. Much, but not all, of this increased mortality risk could be explained by the development of preventable cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes. That means that preventing these events through proper lifestyle habits and medical care could go a long way toward reducing the increased risk of death faced by women with atrial fibrillation.
